Hey, Everyone, be sure to stop by Pachamama on Canyon Road this season for some Latin holiday fun! Here is their card that I created (along with inspiration from Janice St. Marie). Janice found a crazy hat that makes up the tree. This I decorated with photographed sequins and red bows; layered it all in Photoshop against an antique textured card.

My new illustration for the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Association's annual Barkin' Ball. A big affair! I also do the decor for the ball which is held every year at the convention center. This year the Western theme related to old time Western movies.

My two page illustration for a magazine article about a woman (angel) playing a harp sending out healing energy to a hospital patient. The magazine art director will place a title on top left and begin the article on bottom right. Had fun doing it.

I'm getting a bit ornate on this one using a hand-stamped, patterned background for the illustration of a local belly dancer I photographed at the Renaissance Faire. Then I added a story line... sort of an excuse for what's going on here.

Here is a piece promoting the CD of the latest Steampunk story from ZBS.
I illustrated it using a collage of old photos, layers of textures and the super robot woman who has arms of living trees. I created her in Illustrator using the mesh technique. What fun. Another Parade in Madrid, NM

Every year in Madrid, a parade of locals celebrates the lighting of the Christmas lights in this old mining town. It's a festive afternoon with bagpipe players leading the parade of happy dancers, the volunteer fire department truck, and pets of various breeds walking along with angels, gypsies and Santa on a motorcycle.

Parade highlights were folks like these... a Gander with his goose and a holiday cook walking her dog.
Posing nicely with their human friends are Solo the yak (w/Annie) and Murphy the friendly goat (w/Cindy).

Dixon Open Studios

Edy and I drove up the "high road", dined at Sugar Nymphs in Penasco, then over to Dixon to visit a few artists in their studios on this beautiful autumn day.

Glorious Aspens!

Went up the mountain to see the Aspens now that they are golden. Lots of people walking dogs and taking in the beautiful weather. We stopped by a babbling brook (it really was babbling!) and the sky turned dark for a few minutes allowing me to capture that sun glow on the trees. Glorious!

Art in Colorado

Well, just a few selections of what we saw in Colorado.
First, a view of one corner in the DAM.
I have no idea of why a giant blue bear is looking into the window of the building in downtown Denver.
Nor what the baby in the museum is so upset about. But the Chilhuly room in Colorado Springs was absolutely glowing!

Just returned from a wonderful time in Denver (and other parts of Colorado). Love the new museum addition by Libeskind which is covered in titanium panels and is meant to recall Colorado's geometric rock formations.

The large exhibit of Sandy Skoglund's "Fox Games" depicts an invasion of gray foxes within a restaurant. The foxes prowl on and around red tables in an entirely red room. Every element of the installation—forks, knives, plates, dinner rolls, and even a squirrel in the mouth of one of the foxes—is painted red. Click on photo to enlarge!

Deborah Butterfield's horses are still the best! She has the pieces of wood cast in metal first, then assembles them into a horse. Wow!

Oh, yes, this little place was on our drive through the mountains.

May Day in Santa Fe

A somewhat chilly day at the farmer's market and railyard park, but lots of people out for the May Day celebration!
We especially love to see sombrero man out again. And Wise Fool puppetry gang put on a great show for families.

Time to update... so here are a few cards I've sent out that you may not have seen. I rather like the rabbit. It is drawn from a sculpture I love by Gino Miles, a sculptor who has a place on Canyon Road.
The Graphic Designer Souvenir speaks for itself. Why is drawing with a mouse easier than drawing with a pen and tablet? Practice!
And when I get my scanner working again, I'll scan a few of Dave's for you to see!

Peñasco Day Trip

Dining at the Sugar Nymphs Bistro in Peñasco (where the fine chef migrated from San Francisco's Greens Restaurant.)
Located next to the town theatre with a cold and lovely lobby area.
And outside, some creative fences brightened by the snow.

Worry Bunny Episode

Palin gave me a photo she shot of a delicious green sueded bunny from a Harrod's display in London.
It was so luscious, I felt it must have special powers... thus, Worry Bunny was born.

I think Dave did not like my Worry Bunny so much, at first; hence his article announcing worry Bunny's death.

But I assured him that, since rabbits reproduce so well, there were plenty more "sons of Worry Bunny" to carry on.

Now Dave seems to be convinced of the value of Worry Bunny and makes a call in an emergency... only to find him headed off for a cruise. Sigh.

But, not to worry, Dave, Worry Bunny is never on vacation!

A Yak day

OK, today I ran out to Annie's ranch in Cerrillos with Katherine.
As we were driving in, we came across Annie and Palin rounding up a wayward horse, and followed them up the road.
Met Patricia and Russ with granddaughters looking at the blue-eyed horse. Palin rewarded Pecosa with a carrot and everyone got to pet Solo, one of the young yaks.
All in all, a nice Thursday morning! Look at that view!

It was Cancion's (the horse) 25th birthday. She grazed, unfazed, for most of the party. Cathy and Sarah (the horse's human companion) had a good laugh. Revelers enjoyed carrot cake. Cancion enjoyed carrots.

Bay Area trip

Palin and I spent almost a week in the Bay Area. We stayed with dear friend, Carol Adrienne all nights, except for one night in Half Moon Bay with Gretchen, Kerrie and their boys. (That is their full size metal dino in the front yard) Met up with some old friends. Saw the Warhol show at the DeYoung museum. Another show at the Palace of Legion of Honor. Ate at fabulous restaurants and did some fun shopping in Noe Valley, downtown San Francisco and Berkeley.

The Heard Museum & Biltmore

We also spent time at the Heard in downtown Phoenix. What a beautiful, classic museum. There is a long display of glass near the entry by Tony Jojoba. And a large collection of Native Art.

My favorite was the current exhibit by Tony Abeyta. Every piece was black and white watercolor and charcoal. This one is a huge piece... maybe 15 or 20 feet high that he did directly on a gallery wall. His son did a video of him working on the piece.

We also stopped at Wright's old Biltmore Hotel and walked the grounds. What a beauty.

Taliesen West

During our time in Scottsdale, we took a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesen West. We had a very knowledgeable tour guide and it was a terrific tour. Here are a few photos of Taliesen and one of his collection of 12 Chinese clay sculptures.

Drove over to Arizona with Ann. We stopped in Winslow to see the beautiful old hotel La Posada designed by Mary Colter. Here is a photo of a corn design gate and one sitting area where you can watch the trains just outside the windows.

Stayed one blustery cold night in Flagstaff. But had a delicious dinner at Karma in the old town area.

Madrid Holiday Parade

It was a sunny and chilly afternoon in the little mining town of Madrid with a diverse assortment of locals for the annual parade and lighting of Christmas lights. Palin rode her new horse, Pecosa, along with four friends on their horses. Char's horse is sporting antlers. That's Annie in the Arabian costume. Steve is riding his Clydesdale.

Tracy brought her two dogs all dressed for the holidays.

A Day of Art with Craig

Palin's friend, the artist Craig Kosak, graciously toured us around Seattle beginning with the Gage Academy and then his painting studio that you see here.

He also introduced us to a few of his other artist friends in their wonderful studios. This one is a letterpress art studio of Lynda Sherman.

Craig took us to a fabulous seafood dinner on the waterfont where we watched the sunset!

At the new Olympic Sculpture Park at Pier 70, we spent a morning wandering through sculptures by giants of the art world, Tony Smith, Oldenburg, diSuvero, Nevelson and more! Here's Palin among 3 of the 5 Serra pieces. And Calder's Eagle (which Palin cleverly photographed with the Space Needle within)

The new SAM downtown had this impressive lobby display by Cai Guo-Qjang!

The Art Deco Asian Art Museum used to be the entire Seattle Art museum until they opened the new one downtown this year. We loved the contemorary Chinese book show and the Tibetan Buddhist art!

A Day in Seattle

After another delicious breakfast at our B&B and a relax in the parlor, we set off for the park and conservatory.

Of course we had to go downtown to the fish market and Pioneer square.

Ending up with the troll holding a volkswaken in his hand under a bridge. The usual Seattle sights!

Vacation at the Hoh Rainforest

Out on the Olympic Peninsula last week, Palin and I stayed overnight at an Ozzie and Harriet-type bed and breakfast so that we could get up early and travel to the Hoh Rainforest. It is the only one of it's kind and gets the most rainfall of anywhere on the continent. But it was sunny and perfect the day we visited. Here are a couple of Palin's photos, including Lake Cresent, with it's marvelous lodge built in 1916 and it's clear turquoise waters with barely any human visitors! Also, the harbor at Port Townsend where we stayed in a beautiful old Victorian hotel. Stay tuned for more - our visit to Seattle

A visit with Alice

Went to see Alice Watterson's new studio in her former garage... what a terrific transformation. So now she has her studio in the back yard to weave the fabric, as well as the back room studio space and now the new space for power tools...drill, bandsaw and sanders, as well as storage for the many materials. And I was just in time to see her new art ready for a show! Great treat! Here, have a look...

Folk Art Market day

Made it through 3 hours in the hot sun. Had a delicious horchata drink to cool me for a while. Seems more crowded that ever this year! But take a look at the photos to get a feel for the market! This woman from near Biejing sold me a beautiful tie die fabric.

Taos

Saturday, spent a day in Taos with friend Ann. Weather was perfect! Ran into PJ there (Bob was somewhere, too) Had a great dining experience at El Monte Sagrado and strolled their beautiful gardens. Forgot to photograph anything until on our way out of town when we cruised a bed and breakfast locale with a wedding cermeony (thats the groom behind the pole) of people we did not know. Then spied a palimino mare and her nursing offspring at 912 dirt road. Those are the only shots to show you of Taos.

backstage opera tour

Palin and I toured backstage at the Santa Fe opera. We got to see models of current season sets and observe construction of the sets and props as well as demonstrations of lighting, audio and stage managers boards/equipment. The costume shop was just getting set up, but a few initial pieces were on display. It is a huge operation - very impressive.

One of my favorite items was this chandelier they constructed from plastic. They made molds to create the leaves and flowers and the central globe areas are made from thrift store bowls and vases!

matsuri

The third annual Japanese festival held in Santa Fe - another success for JIN. So much fun! We saw beautiful clothes and crafts for sale and watched some interesting stage performances (including aikido practitioners demonstrating unnatural ways to punish their bodies). Ate good food, especially the homemade mochi - mmm. By far the highlight was Art Lee with two women of his wadaiko group, Tokara. Everyone stopped whatever they were doing - his performance was intensly magnificent! Great show.

reclining dream

I dreamed I was reclining on my pink plastic daybed, listening to T.S. Eliot recite the Four Quartets... "I said to my soul, be still, wait without thought for you are not ready for thought". Then, I thought there was an owl, about to tickle me with his wing. Motto cards floated down from the past. Was it really a dream? Or just playing around with Photoshop!
